Tech firms are making huge investments in generative AI tools, but nearly half of cybersecurity professionals say they have little or no or knowledge of AI, according to ISC2's Cybersecurity Workforce Study 2023, which surveyed 14,865 international security practitioners and decision-makers.

Clar Rosso, CEO of ISC2, said the lack of AI knowledge shown in the annual study is not necessarily negative. "I actually think that that's positive, because that is showing that cyber professionals are trying to grapple and understand the real issues that we're dealing with." She added that "cybersecurity professionals do not rush to say, 'I have the answer.' The first instinct is. 'Let me investigate.'"

Rosso recommended that as organizations adopt AI tools, they should apply the same security principles to AI that they use for other applications and data: "Have I deployed it securely? Is the operationalization of it secure? What else can I or should I do? Where are the threat vectors? What does my attack surface look like?"

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group, Rosso discussed:

  • Highlights of the ISC2 Cybersecurity Workforce Study;
  • Specific challenges cybersecurity leaders anticipate with the increasing use of AI and cloud;
  • How organizations are investing in training and development to meet the demands posed by emerging tech.

Rosso has more than two decades of experience helping global professional associations and certifying bodies grow and strengthen member value. As CEO of ISC2, she is responsible for the strategic direction and management of the association.
